THE MESSAGE IN ROMANS (54) Romans 9:1 – 11:36

A warning to Gentile believers.

The apostle Paul asserts that God did not reject all of Israel and that those who have fallen off can be brought back. “And even they if they do not continue in their unbelief – will be grafted in, for God is able to graft them in again.” Romans 11:23, NET. Grafting the natural or cultivated branches into uncultivated roots is a natural process. The author has performed numerous such grafting. However, grafting the wild or uncultivated branches into cultivated roots is a unique process not practiced by those who work the land for a living. It had to be done by God. Therefore, Paul asserts that if God has grafted the Gentiles into Jewish roots, he could graft back the fallen-off Jews. “For if you were cut off from what is by nature a wild olive tree, and grafted, contrary to nature, into a cultivated olive tree, how much more will these natural branches be grafted back into their own olive tree?” Romans 11:24, NET.

In the above verse, Paul reiterated the words of Jesus concerning the judgment of the Jews. “They will fall by the edge of the sword and be led away captive among all nations. Jerusalem will be trampled down by the Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.” Luke 21:24, NET. Will the time come when Jews will acknowledge Jesus as the promised Messiah? Both Jesus and Paul imply so. We do not have other confirmation in the Bible. Therefore, we must not speculate concerning this probability. Paul was certain that “A partial hardening has happened to Israel until the full number of the Gentiles has come in.” Romans 11:25.

The apostle Paul supports his assertion, “For the gift and the call of God are irrevocable.” Romans 11:29, NET. Again, will there be a time when the Jews will call on Jesus as their Messiah? We could not say no. However, we could not speculate concerning such a time. “Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and how fathomless his ways!” Romans 11:33, NET. How will it be at the time of the end? No one can tell. God’s love is incomprehensible, and his plans are unsearchable. “For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be glory Forever! Amen.” Romans 11:36.

The subjective part of the gospel is next.
