The wretched man.
The yielded believers have two natures. One is the sinful biological nature, the flesh, inherited from the first man Adam. The other is the new human spirit received from the second man – Jesus Christ. The yielded believers are guided by the Holy Spirit, whom the Father sent to dwell in them. Therefore, the yielded believers are delivered from the law’s dominion. Christians who did not experience the new birth are carnal, guided by the sinful flesh. The law defeats the carnal Christians. However, the yielded believers find themselves in an unwanted situation. “So I find the law that when I want to do good, evil is present with me.” Romans 7:21, NET. The yielded believers acknowledge in their minds that God’s law is good. However, they are not under the law’s guardianship. The yielded believers are married to the One who is above the law. They are now conforming to the universal principle of selfless love, as guided by the Holy Spirit. However, their sinful biological nature cannot respond properly to the guidance of the Holy Spirit and the wishes of the new human spirit.
“But I see a different law in my members waging war against the law of my mind and making me captive to the law of sin that is in my members.” Romans 7:23, NET. The yielded believers are free from the power of sin but not from its presence. Accordingly, they are always aware of a civil war waged by the law of sinful flesh against the law of the Spirit. Therefore, the yielded believers long to be freed from the law of sinful flesh.” Wretched man that I am! Who will rescue me from this body of death?” Romans 7:24, NET. This is the cry of every yielded believer. They have changed their attitude and how they think. The yielded believers have the spirit and attitude of Jesus Christ. They are new people in the old body. Accordingly, they cry out, “Who shall deliver me?” Paul helps.
“Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord!” Romans 7:25, NET. God has removed our sin from us through the body of Jesus Christ on the cross at Golgotha. We now have a new and eternal life of Christ Jesus. Our sinful life died forever in the body of Jesus Christ on the cross at Golgotha. The yielded believers are confident that by the wonderful exchange on the cross, God rendered the body of this death powerless. However, our experience of two masters but one slave will continue until the return of Jesus Christ. Then we will receive a new body compatible with the new human spirit in Jesus Christ. Until then, all should say with Paul, “So then, I myself serve the law of God with my mind, but with my flesh I serve the law of sin.” Romans 7:25, the second part, NET. Which law do we hold in the highest regard?
